Sports Law

KŠD LEGAL proudly holds the title of the winner of the Leading Law Firm of the Year in Sports Law ranking list, and it has held this title each year since 2010.

In the area of sports law, the KŠD LEGAL team, which is now led by Ondřej Novák, who took over this management role from Jan Šťovíček, a recognized expert in sports law, primarily provides legal services related to the preparation and realization of sport events, the arrangement of participation of Czech athletes at those events, the arrangement of marketing and sponsorship matters, and, last but not the least, the representation of athletes, clubs or national federations before national and international disciplinary and arbitration authorities. Within these legal activities, KŠD LEGAL provides advice to major sports organizations, clubs, foundations, or individual athletes, as well as business entities in relation to their marketing, sponsorship, and advertising activities in the sports.

When we talk about sports law, we mean in particular matters related to the autonomy of sports organizations and sports regulations, the rights and liability of athletes when participating in sporting events, agreements between athletes and clubs or sporting authorities (unions, federations, associations, etc.), marketing and rights relating to personality of athletes or sport clubs, competition aspects of sport activities, disciplinary proceedings, anti-doping matters, or matters related to civil court reviews of decisions made by sporting authorities.

KŠD LEGAL is one of the few law firms in the Czech Republic focusing on sports law directly. Founding partner of KŠD LEGAL and then Of Counsel, JUDr. Jan Šťovíček, Ph.D., current President of the Autoclub of the Czech Republic, a recognised expert in sports law, and an arbitrator of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, created and from 2015 managed a specialized team of sports lawyers of KŠD LEGAL that made its reputation not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad.

Apart from extensive experience in representing athletes themselves, the Attorneys at Law of KŠD LEGAL also act as officials of sports organizations, and they are also arbitrators or members of disciplinary boards in individual sports federations. It is a significant competitive advantage, because they can see the relevant matters from both sides and utilize their experience advantageously in a particular case.

Within its practice in the area of sports law, KŠD LEGAL in particular focuses on:

  • Preparing contractual documentation for athletes and sports organisations;
  • Preparing and consulting sports regulations, establishing sports entities;
  • Representing athletes before disciplinary authorities and courts; and
  • Representing sports organisations before courts or representing athletes in anti-doping cases (including the representation before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne).

The high quality of legal services provided in the area of sports law is demonstrated by the Leading Law Firm of the Year in Sports Law award that we have received for seven consecutive years already.

The law firm KŠD LEGAL has also been included in a working team that has been commissioned to prepare a new act on support of sport and other related materials.
